Carpets of Stone

Green filigree ceiling lit by pinpoints of light. Islands punctuate and dissolve in a carpet of stone. A crunch underfoot, a lick of lush foliage, an entry to behold.

The brief

Create a welcoming arrival experience as visitors draw near the theatrical façade of this Double Bay home. Maximise permeable landscape areas and accommodate a driveway and entry pedestrian path.

The space

Tiny sites can be some of the hardest to get right – especially when two-thirds is taken up with garage parking – but we love a challenge. Sometimes the strictest boundaries engender the most creative solutions.

A single material was chosen for the ground treatment to let the timber façade treatment steal the show and increase the perceived size of the space. No boundaries or dividing lines, only shapes and surprise affects emerging out of the sea of stone.

On top of this ground treatment we layered steppers punctuated by outcrops of lush prehistoric foliage, suggesting a path to the front door and hinting at a time before straight lines and right angles.
