Seaside Sanctuary

Southerly busters, salt wind and sand. Clearings carved in the coastal scrub. A place to sow and live just so. For all creatures crawling, running, resting.

The brief

Carve out distinct and usable spaces in a garden that began as the project of an overzealous green thumb and shot up into an overgrown tangle. This garden will be lived in, a site for experiences. That means lawn to sprawl across, a new area to cook and eat, a place to plant citrus and a patch for fruit and vegetables. Maintain existing ground levels and edges, but invite bird life with a water feature and Australian natives.

The space

The first call we made was to an arborist. Taming the trees meant mapping the site to define the new spaces, all branching out from and connected by a central spine featuring a path and water feature.

Follow the snaking path punctuated with mighty Corten vegetable beds to a backyard studio. The palette is one of rusty oranges, deep burgundy and grey foliage. The canvas is a garden referencing the dry coastal planting of the Sydney coastline.
